When did you first realize you were an artist?
Asked in this way, the question suggests that one is born an artist and then has to come out. Being an artist is just like being gay (at least by some accounts). It is an intrinsic trait just waiting to be discovered.

Yes, I've got magical artistic powers. From birth, I was chosen by the flying spaghetti monster to be an artist;
but it was not until the tender age of X that I had the revelation that I'd been anointed by his tender durum tentacles.
